The governor of Connecticut, Jodi Rell has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff to honour the 2 fire-fighters of Bridgeport who died while fighting a blaze in a 3-story house. They were Lt. Steven Velasques and Michel Baik.
They were pronounced dead in the hospital after being found unconscious atop the 3 story building which was on fire. Bridgeport officials informed that they would be holding a news conference on Sunday to elaborate on the fire that killed the 2 fire-fighters.
The 2 fighters lost their lives trying to ensure that there were no people inside the burning building. After reaching inside the building, they sent Mayday signals to their colleagues outside.
Eventually a rescue team arrived which found the 2 men unconscious and tried to revive them by CPR. As it was of no help, they immediately transferred them to a hospital where they were declared dead. 3 of their other colleagues suffered from non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Connecticut post, Saturday was the first time a fire-fighter lost his life while trying to discharge his duty. Investigators are carrying out an extensive search into the cause of the massive blaze that led to the deaths of 2 efficient fire-fighters and the exact reason behind their death.
