Greenpeace founder, Dorothy, breathed her last on Friday

At the age of 89, on Friday, the Greenpeace founder, Dorothy Stowe, found her way to heaven.

The Greenpeace movement was started and founded by Dorothy, her husband, Irving Stowe, and Jim Bohlen. Jim’s death took place just about three weeks back.

Stowe was suffering . She was having three deadly health problems – kidney disease, leukemiaand diabetes. Dorothy died at the University of British Columbia hospital.

In 1974, Irvin died of Cancer. In 1966, Dorothy and Irvin moved to Vancouver from Rhode Islandto avoid “atomic fallout from nuclear tests in Polynesia and avoid contributing to nuclear proliferation by paying taxes”.

In Vancouver, Dorothy ans Irvin met Jim Bohlen and Marie Bohlen and then started the protests against the American test nuclear bombs on Amchitka Island, off the coast of Alaska in 1970.

Their protests group ‘Don’t Make a Wave Committee’ became a worldwide movements.

“Who knew that four people at a kitchen table could give rise to a movement that has offices in 40 countries? You couldn’t possibly have predicted it,” said Dorothy Stowe after co-founder, Jim Bohlen passed away.

They had sent a protest ship towards the test zone in 1971 to make their ‘peacenik’ message reach the U.S. Government.

Kumi Naidoo, an Indian-origin South African now leads the Greenpeace movent. He is the Greenpeace movement’s international executive director.
