KABULÂ — An American service member was shot dead in an attack in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
The alliance said the service member died of wounds sustained in an insurgent small-arms attack in eastern Afghanistan, but provided no other details. The attack was not related to a Taliban attack on Jalalabad airport earlier on Wednesday, which is also in eastern Afghanistan.
The U.S. Army confirmed the casualty was American.
The attack comes as the rate of coalition fatalities in Afghanistan has sharply risen over the past few months, with around 100 coalition service members being killed in June alone.
On Sunday, hundreds of coalition and Afghan soldiers launched a major offensive against al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents in northeast Afghanistan. Many insurgents were reported to have been killed in the fighting, as well as two American soldiers and one Afghan service member.
Wednesday’s fatality was also not related to the operation in northeast Afghanistan.
