NANNING, CHINA  — Around 3 dozen primary school pupils were sickened on Sunday after inhaling some kind of toxic gas in south China, state-run media informed.

The incident happened in a classroom of Fullin Primary School in Wuming County of China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. A spokesman with the regional public security department said the pupils began vomiting and feeling dizzy after they smelled a ‘stinky odor.’

Twenty pupils with serious symptoms were receiving medical treatment in Wuming County People’s Hospital, the spokesman told the state-run Xinhua news agency. They were all in a stable condition hours after the incident.

An initial police investigation showed the pupils were poisoned by toxic gas, the spokesman said, but it was unclear if it happened by accident or on purpose. An investigation is underway.
