Going The Distance
Going the Distance has brought to the fore-front a real-life topic that haunts most adults-dealing with a long distance relationship. The romantic comedy involves the love life of two adults who after numerous heart breaks have made a promise to themselves never to fall in love again-Drew Barrymore who plays Erin and Garrett played by Justin Long.
But as fate would have it, they meet & bypass their decision to just have ‘a little fun’ & end up madly in love wit each other.
Erin ‘s character is that of a level-headed girl eager to make it big in her career. She is currently doing internship at New York Sentinel and has plans to get back home to San Francisco in about 6 weeks time. Garrett is a music-freak and his character is ‘supposed’ to be defined by his love for music. But he falls short of that definition & restricts himself to arcade games & Top Gun.
Going the Distance isn’t so much about the chemistry between these two as it is about their impending fall-out. With a supporting cast of Jason Sudeikis who plays the ultra-possessive fiend of Garrett-Box and his roommate Dan played by Charlie Day, Going the Distance explores the various reasons why couples have to work double hard to keep a long distance relation alive. Dan adds the comic relief with his excessive help getting in the way. There is also Erin’s sister Corinne played by Christina Applegate who is too much protective of her.
After the couple move apart we see how problems crop up & tensions flare bringing their romance to a near end. Geoff LaTulippe the screenwriter for Going the Distance has managed to technically portray accurately the 21st century romance that’s sidelined by career issues & geographic distances. Romance isn’t fairy tale any more.
We see Erin & Garrett’s indecisions & worries as they try to deal with their career concerns & struggle to stay together. The worse side of Going the Distance is the cheap comedy that’s attempted to draw laughter but falls short, way too short of it. Maybe if they had stuck to the main story instead of having sideshows Going the Distance could have done better.
