KIEV, UKRAINE – A package filled with explosives detonated on Wednesday at the Church of the Holy Virgin in the southern Ukranian city of Zaporizhzhya, killing an elder woman and leaving nine injured, local media reported.
The package was left directly in front of the temple. So far, an 80-year-old woman was killed; she was inside the church and suffered from severe burns and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. The nun was initially reported as being in life-threatening condition.
Eight additional people have been reported injured by the blast; three of them are in serious but stable condition. Initial reports indicate that the explosive was a parcel bomb and was equivalent to 500g of TNT. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The explosive package was left at the front of the church door, but it went unnoticed until it exploded. Shockwaves from the detonation left pieces of broken glass sprawled inside the temple.
The explosion occurred at 4:26 p.m. local time. The blast could be heard from over two blocks away. The investigation into the blast is still on going. There was no further information was immediately available.
